BIO-SENTINEL - BIOACTIVE AND BIOSANITIZED PACKAGING: DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE AND ECO-SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES FOR THE FOOD INDUSTRY

On the “Sustainable Growth Fund – Agrifood PON I&C 2014-2020 Helpdesk”, referred to in Ministerial Decree 05/03/2018 Chapter III, in partnership with the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno and the company Grancarni Srlfor the development of biofunctionalized polymeric materials with antimicrobial peptides.

Brief description of the project

The aim of the project is to create both a form of active packaging (AP) and biosanitizers through an innovative and eco-sustainable approach in which natural antimicrobial agents are used on the one hand to coat the surface of polymeric materials in order to control the growth and proliferation of unwanted microorganisms in highly perishable foods and on the other hand they are conveyed, through the functionalization of nanoparticles, in the compositional mixture of disinfectants for surfaces in contact with food.

Objectives achieved by the project:

  1. Functionalization of polymeric films adapted to the process systems of the industrial partner
  2. Evaluation of the antibacterial activity of active packaging
  3. Prototypes of beef and pork, RTE and pre-cooked semi-finished products.
  4. Evaluation of the shelf life of preparations and semi-finished products packaged with functionalized packaging
  5. Production of hybrid nanoparticles conjugated with antibacterial peptides.
  6. Evaluation of antibiofilm activity
