In this case study, we address a new packaging line for one of our clients. Packaging, as discussed in the previous article, plays a central role in the industrial process of a food or beverage product.

Starting Situation and Final Objective
Our client needed to create a new packaging line for biscuits characterized by high eco-sustainability to meet the increasingly stringent recommendations to reduce Global Warming Potential, that is, environmental pollution caused by CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. At the same time, the packaging line had to guarantee better and higher production efficiency.
The work of ITP to achieve this goal was to provide technical and documentary support through phases of research, development, and installation of the new packaging line.
Strategy Adopted
This project involved a complete technical analysis to characterize existing production lines and identify all critical phases and factors related to the packaging process.
Thanks to this thorough study, it was possible to design and build a new packaging line capable of guaranteeing standards and flexibility for the client’s needs that were not achievable with the existing lines.
ITP followed and supported the company in all research & development phases, from design to installation and commissioning of the new area. We participated in the material selection through bibliographic research and with specific laboratory tests using instruments suited to the project requirements.
It is worth mentioning that a dedicated ITP team collected and managed all documentation related to each project phase from concept to final completion.
Results Obtained
We developed a biscuit packaging line with significantly higher productivity than the previous one. We optimized the process and achieved substantial energy savings, along with a corresponding reduction in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
A new biscuit mixing algorithm was developed that allows optimization and standardization of the entire packaging phase.
At the same time, we created a database of all chemical-physical-structural characteristics for the different biscuit types produced in this project, enabling better quality control of the contents in each package during the industrial process stages.
Finally, we prepared all supporting documentation required by current European regulations imposed on companies wanting their products to be manufactured and distributed in Europe.
Conclusions
The work we carried out led to the development of a packaging material that provided the company with performance superior to previous packaging materials from both economic and environmental perspectives. The goal was achieved, and we are particularly pleased that the company decided not only to integrate the new production line but also, at a later stage, to replace the others to benefit from the tangible advantages of the new solution.
