Techniques for encapsulating bioactive molecules and probiotics
R&D
Encapsulation of bioactive molecules represents a technological solution aimed at incorporating compounds of interest in the food, nutraceutical, and cosmetic sectors to minimize their degradation over time, preserve their functional effect, and eventually modulate their release at the target site.
In particular, probiotic encapsulation is mainly aimed at safeguarding their viability during passage through the gastrointestinal tract, thus improving stability and prolonging the shelf life.
The achievement and colonization of the intestine are fundamental steps to ensure a probiotic can exert its effect.
Therefore, it must be able to resist the acidic environment of the stomach, attacks by digestive enzymes, and bile.
The probiotic can then be coated, through an encapsulation process, with a specially designed coating that allows protection of the microorganism and its release at the target site.
I.T.P. SRL is able to design and develop encapsulation processes for molecules of various natures, implementing different production technologies (such as extrusion, spray-drying, emulsification) and encapsulating materials.
In particular, thanks to industry studies and field experimentation, it is able to:
- Select the most suitable coating type depending on the target site and characteristics of the bioactive/probiotic compound;
- Select the best encapsulation process based on the desired capsule size and the impact of the process on the bioactive/probiotic compound;
- Characterize the capsules and study their alterations during the digestive process and/or shelf life;
- Test the concentration/vitality of the active ingredient and how it is modified by the digestive process or during shelf life.
